Applus IDIADA

IDIADA, as a global partner to the automotive industry, provides complete solutions for automotive development projects worldwide. IDIADA’s Technical Centre is located 70 km south of Barcelona (Spain), having subsidiaries and branch offices in several European and Asian countries with a total work force of around 800 employees. The core services IDIADA provides are: Engineering, Proving Ground and Homologation. Main fields of engineering activity are power train, emissions, noise & vibration, vehicle dynamics, fatigue & durability and passive safety.

IDIADA’s proving ground is recognised as one of the best facilities in the world, and is renowned for the quality of its costumer service. As a multi-user facility, safety and confidentiality are of the highest priority. Weather conditions make this facility the first choice regardless of the type of testing.

IDIADA is currently taking part in several EC funded projects. IDIADA has participated in the following FP5 and FP6 European research projects: APROSYS (Advanced Protective Systems), APSN (Advanced Passive Safety Network), ROLLOVER (rollover protection), CHILD (child safety), NPACS (New Programme for the Assessment of Child-restraint Systems), ETAC (European Truck Accident Causation), TRACE (Traffic Accident Causation in Europe), AUTOFORE (Study on the future options for roadworthiness enforcement), FURORE (Future Road Research), SAFETY-TECHNOPRO (training of professionals in new vehicle safety technologies). In FP7, IDIADA is taking part in eVALUE (active safety systems evaluation), SRRS (Smart Road Restraint Systems), CASPER (general children protection), EPOCh (development of the Q10-Q12 dummy) and EAGAR (assessment of the automotive R+D status in the world). IDIADA is also taking part in SARTRE (Road Trains), ASSESS (pre-crash systems assessment) and FIMCAR (crash compatibility) and will be taking part in ID4EV (in-wheel electric motors) which is currently under negotiation.

The company holds the representation of the Spanish Government in several bodies dealing with automotive research and regulation, such as EEVC (European Enhanced Vehicle-safety Committee) and UN ECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) Working Groups. In the same way, IDIADA is member of several working groups in which passive safety standards are developed (GRSP, Euro NCAP, ISO), thus permitting the acquisition of a complete view in the field of passive safety. IDIADA is also member of the EARPA (European Automotive Research Partners Association) Executive Board and participates in several Task Forces of this organisation.

SzM, TU Darmstadt

The research group System Reliability and Machine Acoustics SzM at the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt) was newly founded in 2001. The research was focused on developing methods and procedures for the evaluation of reliability of complex electro-mechanical systems. This topic represents internationally a new research area. Besides the development of basic methods and procedures, its application to manifold problems in mechanical engineering is also considered. In 2005, the Machine Acoustics group of TU Darmstadt found a new home at the research group SzM as the two groups merged. Combined with 40 years of machine acoustics expertise in the fields of sound generation, transmission, and radiation as well as engineering noise control, this competence is extended with regard to quieter and more reliable products.
SzM currently has 43 researchers, 4 technicians, and 3 secretaries. Courses are held in adaptronics, structural durability, reliability and system reliability as well as in bionics and machine acoustics (basics and applications). SzM is closely related to the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF, also located in Darmstadt. Both LBF and SzM are headed by Prof. Dr. Holger Hanselka who coordinated the European integrated projects “SPURT – Seamless Public Urban Rail Transport” and “InMAR – Intelligent Materials for Active Noise Reduction”.

LMS International

LMS International is a Belgian company, active in the fields of noise, vibration, durability and system simulation. It provides software solutions and engineering services related to experimental as well as numerical problem analysis and design engineering. LMS employs over 950 people worldwide (350 at its HQ in Leuven, Belgium). A policy of continuous R&D investment, linked to transformation into market solutions, has resulted in a strong sustained growth and profitability. Important innovations include solutions for noise localization and sound perception, medium frequency acoustic simulation, engine simulation and driving dynamics. Recent research activities address acoustics and energy performance of hybrid and electric vehicles, design compromises related to the use of lightweight materials and the design and engineering of active safety solutions.
It is the LMS strategy to partner with end-users as well as leading research institutes, part of which takes place in international programs for research (EC-FP7, JTI, EUREKA) and training (Marie Curie, Socrates, Leonardo Da Vinci and Vulcanus programs ). Recent relevant projects include the perception of aircraft fly-over noise and related target sound design and flight trajectory optimization (EC projects SEFA, COSMA, and Clean-Sky GRC), vehicle active safety (Flanders’ Drive projects ReVas, InAst and Semiosis) and Electric Vehicle NVH (Flanders’ Drive project RepMep and Flemish project SRMotif on the use of SR motor technology in EV).
LMS has an extensive portfolio of advanced test equipment, analysis software and high-performance computing facilities. LMS possesses large own test facilities, including 2 semi-anechoic rooms (one with chassis dyno) for vehicle testing, a vibro-acoustic reference car mock up ”concrete car” used by several laboratories and a testbench for hybrid powertrain transmission testing.
LMS is committed to enhance industry-academia cooperation and promote entrepreneurship with young researchers. For this purpose, it contributes actively to many advisory task forces and it is one of the founding members of Leuven.Inc, the spin-off network of K.U.Leuven.

AIT: Österreichisches Forschungs- & Prüfzentrum Arsenal Ges.m.b.H. (AIT Mobility)

Österreichisches Forschungs- & Prüfzentrum Arsenal Ges.m.b.H. (AIT Mobility) is a 100% subsidiary of AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH. AIT-Mobility has established itself as a European research centre in the future-oriented field of mobility. In addition to high-quality measurement and testing technology, AIT-Mobility employs state-of-the-art simulation methods aiming at guaranteeing the capability and sustainability of transport systems for the future. 
Within the business field Transportation Infrastructure Technologies the high-level R&D competence consists primarily of simulation know how, measurement expertise and continuous improvement of infrastructure construction and maintenance. AIT-Transportation Infrastructure Technologies manage extensive measurement databases using the highest technical standards and links this information with additional transportation-related simulation data to create intelligent and environmental friendly transportation systems. For the current project the main contributions will consist in the expertise in traffic acoustics and road safety.

TNO

TNO (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) is one of the major contract research organisations in Europe. With a staff of approximately 4000 and an annual turnover of 600 million Euros, TNO is carrying out research in order to achieve impact on the following seven themes: Healthy Living, Industrial Innovation, Safety, Mobility, Energy, Built Environment and Information Society.

TNO functions as an intermediary between basic research organisations and industry. By translating scientific knowledge into practical applications, TNO contributes to the innovation capacity of businesses and government. TNO is involved in many international projects (about 30% of the market turnover), including EU-funded collaborations.

The theme Mobility includes the research and development concerning clean and safe vehicles, which matches very well with the main areas of focus within the eVADER project. In this theme about 400 employees have their main activity, spread out over several fields of expertise. The Automotive Integrated Safety research group considers the various aspects of active and passive safety from a vehicle technology point of view and will participate in WP4. The Acoustics research group covers most of the expertise areas within technical acoustics and will be supported with expertise from adjacent research fields like sensor technology and design of intelligent systems in vehicles. The Acoustics research group will lead WP 3.

TNO participates and participated in many EC funded projects in the field of noise, vehicle safety and intelligent systems in vehicles, such as:

  • HARMONOISE and IMAGINE, aimed at the development of harmonised European computation methods for noise impact by traffic and industry;
  • QUIESST, aimed at improved simulation methods for noise barrier performance and for optimised design of sustainable noise barriers
  • INMAR, aimed at implementing active noise and vibration control techniques in vehicle design and construction.
  • CVIS  an integrated project aiming to design, develop and test the technologies needed to allow cars to communicate with each other and with the nearby roadside infrastructure.
  • SafeSpot , working to design cooperative systems based on vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication to improve road safety.
  • The CCC project will deve­lop individualized dynamic in-car speed- and distance-advise using a new combination of GPS, E-horizon and Vision to improve navigation accuracy and driver assistance and combines this with UMTS for Floating Car Data, Traffic advice and Local Dynamic Maps.
  • eIMPACT, aiming to carry out a socio-economic impact assessment of IVSS, based on a description of relevant IVSS, and their expected impacts on traffic safety and efficiency  and to provide perspectives on the market introduction of IVSS.

In 2009 and 2010 TNO executed the VENOLIVA study under contract of the EC - DG Enterprise and Industry, that was aimed at analysing the noise emission of road vehicles tested according to two different methods and advising concerning revised limit values for the noise emission of road vehicles.
TNO is a member of several working groups in a wide range of acoustical and vehicle standardisation (ISO, CEN) and operates a EURO-NCAP certified crash test laboratory.  TNO is a member of the EARPA (European Automotive Research Partners Association) Executive Board and participates in several Task Forces of this organisation.

INSA-LYON

INSA Lyon is one of the major universities of Science and Technology in Europe. Created in 1957, INSA Lyon trains yearly more than 900 multi-competent engineers over a 5 year curriculum and has 23 research laboratories. Research involves more than 500 professors and assistant professors, as well as about 600 PhD students. Topics may be civil engineering, chemistry, biology, informatics, telecommunications, mechanics…

This work will be carried out at the Acoustics and Vibration Laboratory (LVA).  There are 11 staff members and 12 PhD students, contributing to four main research fields:

  • acoustic radiation (measurement, prediction of noise radiation and sound insulation, for single and multi-layered panels);
  • source detection (identification of efforts transmitted to a structure through measurements of its displacements and using inverse methods). These efforts can be localised (e.g., compressor engine fixed to a plate) or not (e.g., turbulent boundary layer);
  • mid-frequency prediction (improvement of statistical methods, substructuring of complex systems);
  • sound and vibration perception (tools for improvement of sound quality, interaction of sound and vibration).

During the last 4-years period, this work lead to the publication of 55 papers in international peer-reviewed journals (mainly Acta Acustica united with Acustica, Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Applied Acoustics) and more than 100 communications in international congresses. The lab. was recently given an A+ mark (the best evaluation) by the French Agency for Research Evaluation (Aeres).

LVA is currently a partner of the European funded "Mid-Frequency project" and participated to several previous projects (Silence, Norma, Visper…). It was one of the eight European laboratories involved in the Marie Curie EDSVS program (European Doctorate for Sound and Vibration Studies). Some other projects are supported by the French State (Environmental and Energy Saving Agency) and the county (Rhône-Alpes). Finally, many studies are conducted with an industrial support (car or plane manufacturers or suppliers, household appliances...).

NISSAN MOTOR MANUFACTURING UK Limited (NMUK)

Founded in 1933, Nissan Motor Company, Ltd. is a multinational automaker with 16 production sites worldwide, and products and services in more than 160 countries. Nissan in Europe has 4 manufacturing centres and 5 R&D facilities; in total more than 12,000 employees.
Nissan has been developing electric vehicle and lithium-ion battery technologies since early 90’s where the first fleet demonstrator of full EVs was tested in Japan. Jointly with the Alliance partner Renault, Nissan is highly committed towards the introduction of zero emissions solutions. Eight different full electric models will be commercialised in the coming two years, starting with the Nissan Leaf in January 2011. All the Alliance models are equipped with a sound system to increase vehicle detection, in particular by the most sensible part of the population (i.e. VI people, children or elderly people and other VRI in general).
Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK Ltd. (NMUK) is a Nissan subsidiary established in 1984 that includes manufacturing operations in Sunderland, R&D in Cranfield and the European Design Centre in London. NMUK currently has more than 4,700 employees and in 2009 produced 387,000 vehicles (including Note, Qashqai, Qashqai+2 and Juke). Nissan facilities in Sunderland will manufacture the new full electric vehicle Nissan Leaf as well as the Lithium-ion batteries. Nissan total investment in NMUK exceeds 3 billion EUR.
NMUK is currently participating in national and European collaboration projects regarding the electric vehicle technology. At national level (TSB): EVADINE (Electric Vehicle Accelerated Development In the North East), Electric Motor, with Sheffield University, and Infinity Range Extender, with Lotus and Jaguar. At European level (FP7): Green eMotion, jointly with Renault, Daimler and BMW, aiming at accelerating the development and deployment of compatible charging infrastructure.

RENAULT

A group with industrial and commercial presence in 118 countries, Renault designs, develops, manufactures and sells innovative, safe and environmentally friendly vehicles worldwide. Its 121,422 employees contribute to a strategy of profitable growth based on three key factors: competitiveness, innovation and international expansion. Renault’s target is to be the most profitable of European generalist automotive company. The Group is accelerating its international development with the new Logan and pursuing the Alliance with Nissan.
At the end of 2007 and throughout 2008 the Renault-Nissan Alliance has announced a strategy of massive deployment of electric vehicles using Li-ion batteries. Up to now 30 partnership agreements have been signed worldwide with private companies and local public authorities.

GIE REGIENOV (Renault Recherche Innovation) is a French EIG, acting on behalf of RENAULT SAS and its subsidiaries, in particular RENAULT SPORTS and SOMAC.
Its main mission is to implement the research, advanced engineering and innovation strategy of the whole RENAULT Group.

RENAULT is currently participating in national and European collaboration projects regarding the electric vehicle technology.

  • At national level (ADEME): AVELEC (acoustic of electric vehicle and engine). Partners are Compiegne University, Vibratec, Adetel Equipement, Cedrat.
  • At European level (FP7): Green eMotion ( Electric vehicles demonstration project), ELVIRE (Electric Vehicle communication to Infrastructure, Road service and Electricity supply), ID4EV (Intelligent Dynamics for fully Electric Vehicles), ELVA (Advanced Electric Vehicle Architectures), CAPIRE (Coordination Action on PPP Implementation for Road-Transport Electrification), EASYBAT (Models and generic interfaces for easy and safe Battery integration and swap in electric vehicles), AMELIE (Advanced Flurionated Materials for High Safety, Energy and Calendar Life Lithium Ion Batteries) and EUROLIION (High energy density Li-ion cells for traction)

Regarding acoustics and annoyance, Renault contributed to several European projects (FP6 and FP5) such as SILENCE (integrated methodology for the improved control of surface transport noise in urban areas) and SVEN (Sound quality of exterior vehicle noise) which main aim was a qualitative improvement of the traffic noise situation in urban and suburban areas
The acoustic team also supervised a PhD on warning signals “From perceived urgency to reaction time: application to warning sounds” (Clara Sueid 2004-2007).

PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN

PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN was created when the PEUGEOT brand bought the CITROËN brand in 1976, and later on in 1978 the Chrysler Europe brand. PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN brings together two strong and distinctive brands, each with its own identity, its own vehicle portfolio and commercial marketing.
In 2009, the PSA group has sold 3.18 millions vehicles worldwide, and has maintained its position as 2nd European car manufacturer and its leadership in Light Duty Vehicles in Europe. Present in over 150 countries, the PSA Group sells more than a third of its production outside western Europe.
PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN also confirms its environmental leadership with for the 3rd consecutive year nearly a million sold vehicles emitting less than 130 G of CO2/km.
The 2009 revenue was over 48,4 billions Euros. The consolidated net result was – 1 274 millions Euros for 2009. Over 2 billion Euros were devoted to automotive R&D in 2009 by the PSA Group.

The PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN Group also includes the following companies:

  • FAURECIA, controlled at 70.86% by the PSA Group. FAURECIA core businesses include seats, vehicles interior, front bloc and after-treatment systems. FAURECIA 2009 net revenue was 9.3 billions Euros.
  • GEFCO, controlled at 100% by the PSA Group, is the 2nd logistics company in France, covering from road transport to rail, air and maritime activities as well as industrial logistics, preparation and distribution of vehicles, customs and fiscal representation. GEFCO 2009 consolidated revenue was 2.88 billions Euros.
  • Banque PSA finance, controlled at 100% by the PSA Group, is closely associated with the commercial strategies of the PEUGEOT and CITROËN brands. Present in 24 countries Banque PSA Finance deals with the financing of the PEUGEOT and CITROËN sales. It deals with the financing of the vehicle stocks and spare parts for both brand sales networks and proposes to its clients a complete financing and associated services portfolio. The net banking product at the closing of December 2009 was 1.8 billions Euros.
  • Peugeot Scooters, controlled at 100% by the PSA Group, develops and manufactures bikes and scooters in the range 50 to 500cm3.
  • PEUGEOT CITROËN Moteurs (PCM) sells engines and components made by the PSA Group to external customers for industrial and automotive applications.
  • PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN employs 186 000 persons worldwide.

The Scientific and Future technologies Direction (DSTF) have the role to animate the research activities corresponding to the “acquisition and control of knowledge”, the “exploration and evaluation of technologies in rupture” and to ensure the transfer of scientific and technological explorations towards the other entities of the Group.
Integration of the human factors (IFH) is one of the DSTF's fields. Its work consists with :

  • Bring the scientific knowledge, methods and tools to contribute to the taking into account of the human factors very early in the automotive design and the clarification of the tools for simulation of control and virtual reality.
  • Explore technologies in rupture which could have a future in the automobile product while bringing very upstream a “glance users” directed towards the uses.
  • Prepare methodologies and tools with strong scientific contents and their introduction to contribute to the future trends of the car
  • Bring a better comprehension of sensory perceptions and cognitive mechanisms in the driving activity and the appreciation of automobile environments.
  • Define the most relevant protocols of evaluation in real conditions or virtual.
  • Objectify the returns Human factors to provide to the development's trade a help to the specification.

CONTINENTAL Automotive France SAS (CAF)

Continental develops products for the automotive industry thanks to its 6 main business activities, namely powertrain, Chassis and Safety , Interior tires for heavy vehicles, tires for heavy vehicles and Contitech.

Continental main objectives are to increase vehicle and passenger safety, to improve the engine performances to contribute to emission reduction and environmental protection through the continuous improvement of existing engine technologies but also new electrical and hybrid technologies, to promote security and driving convenience and to manage innovative solutions for communication systems and multimedia.

Continental has developed since many years a world recognized competence in ADAS (see Grand challenge DARPA) and is one of the world leaders for the development of these systems. Continental is able to manage the overall process from the sensor to the Human Machine Interaction. Among the various functions designed and developed by Continental are the related longitudinal control systems with ACC (RADAR or LIDAR technologies), the lateral guidance of the vehicle (camera technology) but also the blind spot detection the detection of vulnerable users, the detection of the traffic signs etc...

Continental Automotive France SAS has been created in 1978. it is the French subsidiary of the international company Continental AG .

The team 'Perception, HMI and Control Group) which will be involved in the eVADER project is located in Toulouse and is part of the CES (Continental Engineering Services) that is a cross divisional organization.

It has developed since more than 15 years highly recognized competences in  perception technologies, vision based, human machine interaction, Driver assistance systems and Driver monitoring. These competences also include the development of measurement tools, image, signal and data processing, diagnostic... as well as experimentation capabilities in real conditions. This know how is also supported by local and national partnerships with physiologists, psychologists, ergonomists, etc.

The team has widely contributed to internal, Eu and French partnership projects SAVE (EU 1995-1998), AWAKE (EU 2000-2004), Diagnostic de la baisse de vigilance des conducteurs (PREDIT 2000-2004), GERICO (PREDIT, 2003-2006) et more recently the Eu projects SENSATION (2004, 2008) AIDE (2004-2008), HAVE-IT (2008-2012), VERITAS (2010-2013) and French projects AUTOSOP (2009-2010), ABV (2009-2012), ATLAS (2009-2012).

Continental provides to the eVader project its competence in the domain of Driving Assistance Systems, Control engineering (diagnostic, decision making...) Human machine interaction and Human machine interfaces but also as system integrator.

European Blind Union (EBU)

The European Blind Union is a non-governmental and non-profit-making organisation founded in 1984.

EBU works to make sure that the interests of blind and partially sighted people (Visually impaired people, VI) are taken into account in all EU decisions which affect them. To achieve this, EBU actively seek to influence EU policies.

EBU currently has 45 member countries. The EBU network has a wealth of expertise in all areas relating to the consequences of sight loss, in particular with access to the labour market for VI people. Our members provide services, training and advice as well as representing the rights of VI people. EBU undertake research, promote public awareness and empower VI people to take up their rights and lead active lives.

The EBU office, based in Paris, is responsible for communication within EBU and for information to the general public. It produces a Newsletter and press releases in English, French, German and Spanish.
